Solarscope Safe Solar Viewer, Educational Size

The Solarscope is a patented implementation of a great idea,
making a portable and safe solar viewer for small groups and
individuals. The 4.5" solar image is projected on a white 13"x13"
screen that is shaded by the Dobsonian-like rocker enclosure.
Sunspots are clearly visible, and eclipses and transits are
impressive.

The optics consist of a 40mm glass cemented doublet (37mm clear
aperture) primary lens mounted in a tube, and a convex silvered
secondary mirror in an aluminum cell. The primary tube and
secondary cell are both adjustable for coarse and fine focusing.
None of the components get hot from concentrated sunlight, and
the focused beam is guarded from accidental eye exposure.

The rocker enclosure and base are made from coated corrugated
paper board that stands up to use and exposure. The components
are shipped flat and are folded and assembled using the supplied
instructions. Initial assembly takes about 15 minutes. Overall
dimensions are 23" high, 14.5" wide, 16.5" deep.

The movement of the solar disc across the viewing screen is
observable, and a supplied calibrated target and educational
materials allow many measurements and calculations to be made
on the field and in classroom workshops:

- Calculating the earth rotation speed and orbit ellipticity
- Calculating the sun rotation speed and the Solar noon
- Measuring the latitude of the observation spot
- True local noon
- Day duration
- Determining the Astronomical Unit
- Writing the Time S Equation
- Earth polar axis inclination
- Earth orbit ellipticity
