Under the black cover, there is a 500 line encoder wheel
and a HP HEDS-9100 encoder. This combination yields 2000 counts
per revolution with 4X quadrature counting. The HEDS-9100 is
good for 100 Khz (12,000 rpm with the 500 line wheel - probably
beyond the top speed of the motor), has TTL outputs and runs on
5VDC, so no encoder signal conditioning board is necessary.
HEDS-9100 Data sheet is here...

The quadrature output allows precise motor speed and position control
with appropriate drive electronics, with a position accuracy approaching
1/2000th of a revolution. Even if run open loop, the encoder output can be
used for DSS or DRO display.

These are new surplus motors from a plotter manufacturer, and the cost
is much less than the price of the HEDS-9100 encoder alone!
